You can (and will) safely fly a Cessna 172 (or most any single engine training aircraft) in the traffic pattern at just about any speed within its operating envelope, both with and without flaps deployed. Most of the time, your 85/75/65 or 80/70/60 or whatever will work just fine. But sometimes it won't. Here are just a few examples:
